Sadly, even if you use every technique to improve FPS and have a really good motherboard with a solid connection to RAM and storage drive, you'll likely only be sporting at best half of the starting speed when the fort gets to its full (by default) 200 dwarf potential. Sadly, there are other things which require DF Hack, a third party program which probably doesn't work with the steam version yet, to handle, like automatically deleting old clothes instead of letting them pile up in rooms forever (though you can atom smash them manually), cleaning various fluids like blood and vomit off of everything (which takes a surprising amount of FPS to constantly check and maintain) among a long list others.Īs others have recommended, you should check the wiki, but these are some of the bigger ones. You can also lower the max dwarfs in your fortress in settings or make the embark smaller if you don't want to manually fight with every embark once your fort gets bigger. Marking unused tunnels and infrequently used parts of the map like the corners of the surface as low traffic will also get your FPS up and marking the central highways and workshops as high traffic.
Doing stuff like assigning traffic designations and marking all of the sky as the lowest traffic (it's stupid, but it does save around 6-7 FPS as it prevents your dwarfs from attempting to find a path high through the sky). There are several ways to combat FPS death.
